“Sunday Morning Music – Sucré” by Sleeping at Last

Sleeping at Last

From Storyline:
We’re changing the way we approach our Sunday Morning Music posts. For the next several months, these posts will be authored by artists so you can get a glimpse into what inspires them. We hope you enjoy today’s post from our friend, Sleeping at Last.

One of my favorite people (and a groomsman in my wedding!), Jeremy Larson, along with Stacy King (Eisley) and Darren King (Mutemath) created a project called Sucré.

Their single, “When We Were Young” (along with the rest of their record) showcases exactly what I love most about each of them as musicians. The melody is this incredible balance of beauty, surprise and newness, and yet somehow still feels like an old friend. The music is energetic but not at all at the cost of emotional weight. Jeremy’s production is so tasteful, with every layer playing a vital role in structure of the song- every piece fitting together perfectly: Stacy’s Voice is stunning, Darren’s drums are so thoughtful and unique, and Jeremy’s string arrangement is truly gorgeous, complimenting every vocal phrase.

“You say that you’re wilting,
But I don’t see it at all.
You’re a thousand things,
You can fly with one wing.”

What beautiful lyrics too. Such great lines here… “You can fly with one wing” exercises one of my favorite “rules” of songwriting – say a lot with little words.

Such a great video too! I love the Kaleidoscope effect throughout, and the clever use of lamps and mirrors.

That’s a lot of gushing, I know … but this song is really special. If I didn’t have the honor of calling Sucré friends, I’d be writing the exact same thing. Beautiful, beautiful music.
